SafeFall — Frequently Asked Questions
SafeFall is a class for adults 55 and up that teaches real balance, mobility, and strength work — plus something most fall-prevention programs skip entirely: how to actually fall without getting hurt. It's based on ukemi, the martial arts practice of falling on purpose, safely.
1
What is SafeFall?
Anybody concerned about a fall — their own, or a loved one's. You don't need to be flexible, strong, or have any prior experience. If you can walk into the room, you can take this class.
2
Who is this class for?
What actually happens in a class?
3
Every class blends mobility and strength work with hands-on practice falling backward, sideways, and forward. You'll learn to protect your head, spread the impact of a fall across your body instead of your wrist or hip, and get back up on your own. There's no sparring and no contact with other people.
Will I be doing jiu-jitsu or martial arts sparring?
4
No. SafeFall is a standalone class — no grappling, no contact, nobody trying to take you down. It borrows a specific, practical skill from martial arts (safe falling) without any of the combat sport around it.
Do I need any experience or equipment?
5
No experience needed, and no special equipment. Wear whatever you can move comfortably in.
Where and when are classes held?
6
SafeFall is held at Rough Hands BJJ, 3048 Bardstown Rd, Louisville, KY. Classes meet twice a month on Saturdays at 10am.
How much does it cost?
7
$199 for a 3-month session (every-other-Saturday cadence).
Is SafeFall affiliated with a martial arts gym?
8
SafeFall is taught at Rough Hands BJJ, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy in Louisville. The falling techniques taught in SafeFall are the same foundational skills BJJ students learn on day one, adapted specifically for adults 55+ with no interest in the sport side of things.
Do I need to talk to my doctor before starting?
9
If you have a health condition, recent injury, or concerns about your ability to get up and down from the floor, it's worth checking with your doctor first. SafeFall is low-impact and self-paced, but as with starting any new physical activity, a quick check-in with your physician is a reasonable precaution
